Often, they’d get distracted by something and stop listening, as indicated by some “uh huh”, “yeah”, and other very generic responses - or sometimes a “Sorry I missed that - can you say that again?” #empathy #emotionalagility #leaderswholistenĪ manager I once worked for used to ask me if I wanted to catch up over lunch - but then check their emails 3-4 times during that 45min or so period, right in the middle of our conversation. Often this resulted in the person finding their own way forward. Instead, a key goal was creating a safe space for the person by #listening, helping them to identify their #emotions, and using reflective statements and open #questions as they explored their situation and options. Wayyyy back at the start of my career as a psychologist, I became a LifeLine counsellor - and very quickly learned just how powerful listening and simply 'being there' could be for those experiencing challenging times.įor me, it was a life-changing experience in learning how to step away from trying to 'fix' people's problems or feelings - because ultimately, you couldn't. NOT trying to 'fix' things, cheer them up, or distract them. Simply 'being there' with the person - listening and acknowledging their experiences and emotions. Sometimes demonstrating empathy can look a bit like this. I've always enjoyed the movie Inside Out, given some of the great messages embedded in the story and scenes. ![]()
